Why Human-Centric Design?

My journey into Human-Centric design stems from over 10 years of practice and education in drawing and professional design. It wasn’t an obvious choice at first, but it became increasingly clear as I evolved as both an artist and a designer.

In my early years, drawing was everything that I knew. I spent countless hours sketching comic-like cars, buildings, and planes—completely absorbed in the act of creating. At that time, I didn’t think much beyond the joy of drawing. But when someone asked if I’d ever consider drawing as a profession, it sparked something in me. For the first time, I realized that my passion could be more than just a hobby—it could have real-world value. This revelation led me to pursue architecture in college, an area where I could merge my interest of spatial design with my skills in graphical representation.

As an architecture student, however, I began to notice something troubling. While the focus of our studies revolved around form, aesthetics, and spatial dynamics, I often felt that the human experience was overlooked. Professors would critique our designs based on how they looked, how their shapes embodied artistic or abstract ideals, or how data suggested they "would contribute to better environments". Yet, there was often little conversation about the people who would actually inhabit these spaces. I couldn’t help but wonder why human needs weren’t placed at the forefront when designing spaces for people.

This disconnection between design and the user experience is what ultimately led me to transition into Human-Centric design. I wanted to create work that not only looked good but truly served the needs of the people who interacted with it.

What makes a human stand out when designing for human?

In my experience, it’s the ability to combine multidisciplinary skills with an empathy-driven approach to design that sets me apart. My journey in design started with a foundation in drawing, where I honed my ability to communicate ideas visually. From there, I expanded my skill set to include modeling, crafting, and developing an overall design vision that enables me to look at projects from different angles. Each of these skills contributes to a comprehensive approach to problem-solving and creativity.

However, what truly makes me stand out is not just my technical proficiency but my commitment to Human-Centric design. I’ve worked on products and designs that go beyond aesthetics, putting people at the core of every decision. For me, design isn't just about creating something beautiful; it's about crafting experiences that genuinely enhance the lives of the users. By focusing on the needs, behaviors, and preferences of people, I ensure that my designs are not only functional but also meaningful.

Being a user of many emerging technologies also informs my design work. From digital tools to physical prototyping technologies, I am constantly exploring the latest advancements to find new ways to innovate. This helps me stay ahead of the curve, adapt to changing trends, and create solutions that are forward-thinking. By leveraging these multidisciplinary skills and a human-centric approach, I can create designs that are both visually compelling and genuinely impactful for the people who interact with them.
